How to get to Lumiar: by car and bus from Rio
Lumiar sits on the lower side of the Nova Friburgo range, about 28 km from the city centre. From Rio there are two roads and a bus combination that works but takes patience.
By car
- Via RJ-116: from Rio you climb through Cachoeiras de Macacu to Mury and take the RJ-142 (Mury-Lumiar). About 170 km and 2.5 hours, with two tolls, per Vem Viver Lumiar.
- Via the Serramar: BR-101 to Casimiro de Abreu, then the RJ-142 up the range. About 160 km, no tolls, more bends.
- From Macaé: about 97 km on the RJ-142, roughly 1.5 hours.
On holidays the Manilha (Itaboraí) stretch often jams with traffic heading to the Lakes Region.

- In Nova Friburgo, FAOL route 48 Lumiar links the city with the district. Vem Viver Lumiar puts it at about 40 minutes.
- Times change by day of the week: check the route 48 timetable on the FAOL website before you travel.
Without a car, stay near the square so you can walk to Poço Feio and restaurants. Options in pousadas in the village centre.
